Define the expense

A need is something essential to daily life; a want adds comfort or enjoyment. The distinction depends on your circumstances. Transport to work can be essential, while an optional upgrade may be flexible.

Look at the timing

Write down the cost, why it matters and when it needs to be paid. Ask whether a smaller purchase, repair or later date could meet the same need. A discount alone does not make a purchase necessary.

Use two separate lists

Put essential bills on one list and flexible purchases on another. Review the essentials first, then decide which optional items fit the money left over. This exercise helps clarify priorities; it does not determine a safe borrowing amount.

Look beyond this month

A monthly budget can miss expenses such as annual renewals, maintenance and seasonal purchases. Review previous statements and upcoming due dates to spot costs that are easy to overlook.

Create an expense calendar

For each known bill, record its expected amount and due month. Dividing a yearly expense into monthly portions can help you plan a regular amount to set aside. Revise the figure when a new quote arrives.

Keep estimates visible

Separate confirmed bills from rough estimates. Review the calendar regularly and include any existing debt commitments. Planning for an annual bill is different from preparing for an unexpected emergency; both deserve a place in your records.

Know what the fund is for

An emergency fund is money set aside for unexpected costs or an interruption to income. Keeping it distinct from money for planned purchases makes its purpose easier to remember.

Estimate your essential expenses

List the costs you would still need to cover if income stopped, including housing, food, transport and existing commitments. MoneySense uses three to six months of expenses as a general emergency-fund guideline. Your circumstances may call for a different amount.

Build it into your routine

Choose a manageable contribution and revisit it when your income or commitments change. Record withdrawals and make a plan to rebuild the buffer. An emergency fund is preparation for uncertainty, rather than a guarantee that every future expense will be covered.

Key takeaways

  • List your own income and spending before choosing a repayment amount.
  • Allow for expenses that do not arrive every month.
  • A worksheet is a planning tool, not a lending decision.

Start with your own numbers

Make four columns: take-home income, household spending, existing commitments and planned savings. Use recent figures so the worksheet reflects your current circumstances.

Include irregular expenses in a separate row. A yearly bill divided into monthly amounts can make it easier to see how much you need to set aside.

Try a simple example

Illustrative monthly worksheet — not a recommended borrowing limit
Take-home incomeS$3,500
Household spending− S$2,100
Existing commitments− S$400
Savings and irregular expenses− S$500
Remaining before a new repaymentS$500

In this example, adding a S$350 repayment leaves S$150. That calculation does not establish that the loan is affordable: omitted expenses or a change in income could alter the result.

Change the assumptions

Try the worksheet again with a larger household bill or a lower income figure. Compare the results with and without the proposed repayment. Keep the version you can explain clearly, and review the actual offer before deciding.

The repayment calculator can help you explore different amounts and periods. Its figures are estimates rather than confirmed terms.

Common questions

Is the remaining amount my borrowing limit?

No. This worksheet simply subtracts example spending from example income. Eligibility and lending limits are assessed separately.
